Field Works: On Campus Observation

Week 9: Field Works - On-Campus Observation

International Islamic University of Malaysia

Sustainable Campus

One of the objectives of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is to make the campus a sustainable and environmentally friendly place and to involve students as an agent of change. This goal has been successfully achieved as proven by the key milestones that the university has passed through these years:

Despite the continuous effort and achievements, the university keeps on adapting to make it relevant to the evolving times. The Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) is moving forward to become a sustainable campus; one that prioritizes environmental, economic, and social sustainability in all of its activities. This means that the campus is designed and managed in a way that minimizes its negative impact on the environment, maximizes its positive impact on society, and sustains its viability and competitiveness in the long term.

Additionally, while striving to be a sustainable campus, IIUM also envisions a sustainable campus community that encompasses the students, faculty, and staff, in all aspects of sustainability initiatives and makes sustainability a priority for all members of the community.

Green Campus

A green campus is a university or academic institution that implements sustainable practices and policies in a way that reduces its environmental impact, conserves resources and promotes sustainable development. A green campus is designed to reduce its environmental footprint, promote environmental conservation, and encourage sustainability by engaging all members of the university community.

Differences between Green Campus and Sustainable Campus

While the concepts of "sustainable campus" and "green campus" are closely related and often used interchangeably, there are some key differences between them:

1. Focus
- Sustainable campuses and green campuses both prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility, but sustainable campuses often have a broader focus that includes social and economic sustainability, as well as environmental sustainability, while green campuses may have a greater emphasis on implementing specific environmentally sustainable practices and policies.

2. Objectives
- Sustainable campuses often aim to meet specific sustainability goals, such as reducing energy consumption, decreasing waste, and promoting sustainable transportation. Green campuses often aim to create a more sustainable and environmentally responsible environment for teaching, learning, and research and may prioritize reducing the university's environmental impact as one of its main objectives.

IIUM is a sustainable campus economically

IIUM being a sustainable campus in the social aspect, encompassing animal welfare

IIUM as a sustainable campus that emphasises on environmental sustainability
