Week 5: IIUM Book Festival 2023

From the 6th up to the 10th of November 2023, the IIUM Book Festival 2023 was held at the Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED) Gallery, IIUM, Gombak. I was given a chance to attend the gallery with my fellow classmates for Sustainable Development: Issues, Principles, and Practices (SCSH1201).

Upon entering the gallery, I was struck by the vibrancy and diversity of the exhibits, which included a wide range of books, artwork, and interactive exhibitions showcasing the latest developments in sustainable development. The range of topics covered included environmental sustainability, social justice, and economic development, all with a focus on finding solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

Science for Sustainable Development: Islamic and Interfaith Perspectives

As I began to explore the various installations, we came upon this one book entitled, "Science for Sustainable Development: Islamic and Interfaith Perspectives" published by IKIM Press. This book explores the Islamic perspectives and approaches in science and sustainable development with emphasis on the concepts and definition of sustainable development, the policy and governance of science for sustainable development, and the role of economics and ethics as the critical basis of sustainable development. The intersection of science and sustainability in this book is crucial for creating a sustainable future, and the book's inclusion of spiritual and cultural perspectives adds depth and context to the discussion.

By emphasizing the importance of considering the spiritual and cultural perspectives, the book reflects the understanding that sustainable development is not just a technical or economic challenge, but also a cultural and social one. A holistic approach that considers all facets of society and the environment is necessary for creating a sustainable future.

Furthermore, highlighting the close relationship between science and sustainable development underscores the need for scientists to take responsibility for ensuring that their research and innovations are used for the benefit of society and the environment. This includes considering the ethical implications of their work and the potential impact on both individuals and the planet.

"Titian Akhir Zaman" by Dr. Raudhotul Firdaus and Ustaz Abdullah Bukhari

Furthermore, I managed to attend the book talk session: "Titian Akhir Zaman" with Dr. Raudhotul Firdaus and Ust. Abdullah Bukhari. The session centered on the book "Titian Akhir Zaman," which explores the concept of end times from an Islamic perspective.

Dr. Raudhotul Firdaus and Ustaz Abdullah Bukhari led an engaging discussion on the topic, delving into various aspects of end-times belief, including prophecies, signs, and the role of science and technology in this context. They explored the question of what it means to be a Muslim in the modern era and the importance of continuing to strive for knowledge and understanding, even in the face of the uncertainties and challenges of the world.

As a fellow student of sustainable development, I found the discussion particularly intriguing, as it delved into the intersection of Islamic teachings and modern science and technology. The emphasis on the importance of continually seeking knowledge and understanding, even as the world around us continues to change, struck a chord with me, and I left the session feeling inspired to continue learning and exploring new ideas.
